Virtual Server 2005 R2 Not Detecting Physical Network Card

I got a new laptop a few days ago and I've been re-installing all my dev tools and servers on it.  Tonight I installed Virtual Server 2005 RC2 and couldn't get it to detect the wireless network card (NIC).  It detected the wired NIC but not the wireless.  I couldn't get Virtual PC 2005 to detect it either.

Turns out that “Virtual Machine Network Services” wasn't selected for the wireless network card.  (Funny, I've never had to do anything with that before.)
Go into Network Connects, right-click the offending network connection and verify that “Virtual Machine Network Services” is selected.  Click OK.

When you go to the Virtual Server 2005 Administrator and select Add Network, you should now see the NIC in the “Network adapter on physical computer” drop down list.

You da' Man!

VMNS was actually enabled on my wired NIC, but toggling it off, saving, then toggling it back on did the trick.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi Nick,

The first thing I'd try doing is using the full version of Virtual Server R2. You could also experiment with Virtual PC 2007. I'd say that if you can't get it working quickly with either of those that it just might not be possible.

I remember reading that the part of the spec that governs how virtual server hooks into wifi cards is fuzzy. That fuzziness could be interpreted to say it should be impossible to do what we want over wireless. (Bummer, huh?)

Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read this.

Even though I got this sort of working with my wireless connection and Virtual Server, it was very unreliable with DHCP. I eventually went and installed the loopback adapter with internet connection sharing (ICS) and bind my virtual servers to the loopback adapter.

It's an extra hoop to jump through but it works.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the response Ben. I have tried with the loopback adapters but am constantly having troubles with connecting to both my internal network and to the web. My internal network uses 192.168.1.x IPs and the loopback is configured to use 192.168.0.x, but when i check out the Guest's IP address it is a 10.x.x.x IP. I think I'll uninstall beta 2 and install the original and see if that works. Virtual PC 2007 does pick up the wireless adapter and it works great, but Virtual Server seems so much faster (oh and VS 2005 R2 SP1 RC cam out today, i'll try that too)
Thanks

I had the same problem. Virtual server 2005 r2 sp1 running on Vista Business. I tried alot of stuff. But it was because my existing virtual network had somehow been removed from the list of "Virtual Networks" within my VMRC Plus 1.7. Once I added the correct one back I was able to re-associate my virtual connection to my physical one.

It was that simple and I can't even begin to tell you what I attempted to do to get this back online. I'm just happy I refused to reinstall Virtual Server 2005 R2. Just as an FYI...Vista stores the virtual network configs..(for lack of a better term) in this location: Users\Public\Documents\Shared Virtual Networks
